Auburn Seminary

New York, New York

Partnering in Its Transformation

Step 1 - Vision: Auburn Seminary wanted to unite its various functions in one dynamic, mission-aligned space that would help realize its new strategic plan. Its leaders asked us to partner in this transformation, and in our first meeting described the history, culture and mission as well as their desire for a more open, collaborative environment.

Step 2 – Their Current Facility: We analyzed their existing quarters, which were on several floors, to understand the functions they’d required and the total space each took. We also looked at how well the layout supported the organization’s activities.

Step 3 – Their New Facility: To determine Auburn’s new space, we together outlined the functions, both new and existing, that were essential to promote their vision as well as how much space each would need.

Step 4 – The Right Location: We tested potential spaces using the results of our analysis. When we found a space that seemed to meet their needs, we quickly created a layout that showed it was a good fit.

This layout became the driving force behind Auburn’s lease negotiations with the landlord. We assisted by making sure the lease included architectural language that prevented the landlord from dictating what Auburn could or could not do with the space. Auburn took possession of the space in March 2015. Phase 1 opened in August 2015 and construction on Phase II will commence Summer 2016.
